Aston Martin Vantage

The Aston Martin Vantage is Britain's compact grand-touring sports car, and the United States has always been one of its biggest markets — which means a broad, deep pool of used cars, often in higher specification than European equivalents.

Model profile

Model history and generations

From launch to today

Two distinct generations dominate the used market. The original VH-platform Vantage ran from 2005 to 2017 as a coupe and roadster, powered first by a 4.3-litre and later a 4.7-litre V8, with the storied V12 Vantage arriving in 2009. This is the analogue Aston — hydraulic steering, a bonded-aluminium chassis and, on the best cars, a proper six-speed manual.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain in detail

The current Vantage uses a Mercedes-AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (M177), rated at 503 hp and 685 Nm from 2018 to 2023, then lifted to 656 hp and 800 Nm in the 2024 update.

Trim levels and variants

Body styles are coupe and roadster (convertible). Beyond the base car, notable US variants include the V12 Vantage and V12 Vantage S, the track-focused AMR editions, and the F1 Edition of the AMG-era car.

When importing makes sense

A Vantage import suits an enthusiast who wants a hand-built British sports car with a genuine cross-Atlantic pedigree, and who may be chasing a specification — a manual gearbox, a particular colour or a V12 — that never came to Europe in the same numbers.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability and common problems

The AMG-era V8 drivetrain is the most robust Aston powertrain in memory — the M177 engine and ZF automatic are shared with numerous Mercedes-AMG models and have a strong record. Watch for coil-pack and ignition issues, carbon build-up on higher-mileage cars, and the usual turbo-era attention to oil and cooling. Early infotainment (a Mercedes-derived system) can feel dated and occasionally glitch.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

How US versions differ

US-market cars carry side marker lights, US-specification bumpers on some model years, an MPH-primary cluster and US telematics.

From US purchase to registration

The assessment depends on the specific vehicle and the circumstances of the transaction. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review any possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are considered separately.

TÜV, approval and license plates

US-market headlights use the FMVSS/SAE beam pattern, which differs from the ECE pattern required in the EU, so they may need adjustment or replacement with ECE-compliant units for registration.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Is importing a used Aston Martin Vantage from the USA worth it?

For a specific specification — a manual, a V12 or a rare colour — the US market often has cars Europe never received, which can make the import very worthwhile despite the costs.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Which Vantage engine is most reliable?

The 2018-onward AMG twin-turbo V8 has the strongest record thanks to its shared Mercedes-AMG hardware.

What is the weak point on the older VH Vantage?

The single-clutch Sportshift automated manual, which suffers clutch and actuator wear; a true manual avoids this.

Can I import a V12 Vantage?

Yes. The V12 Vantage and V12 Vantage S were sold in the US and appear on the used market; each is imported the same way.

Are running costs high?

Yes. Tyres, brakes, servicing and specialist labour are all expensive, so budget accordingly beyond the purchase price.

Does USCar Trader sell the Vantage directly?

No. We are an independent broker for used US vehicles and arrange sourcing, transport and clearance for you.

How can a specific Aston Martin Vantage be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
